Well I spent some time playing with Thunderbird and Gmail IMAP and came to the conclusion that Gmail is not a mail service that works well with IMAP. The basic functions are okay but the fact that if you use an IMAP client and delete a message it will always still exist on the Gmail server unless you go to the web interface and delete messages. When I delete a message I want it DELETED not archived even if I do have 20000 GB of storage on Google 
! I even found information on how to modify Thunderbird for it to sync it’s trash folder with the real trash folder on Gmail and hopefully get around this but to no avail that did not work either.
So I will search for a real IMAP service .. looks like Mobile Me has true IMAP funcionality but with all the issues I have been hearing about the transition from .Mac to .Me I am going to hold off for now and just use the web based Gmail.
